Historic Muskoka Inn Rejuvenated by Unexpected Donation

Bala, ON: Originally established in 1910, the Bala Bay Inn has reopened its doors with a refreshed design, thanks to a generous donation by Keilhauer.

After serving as staff housing for JW Marriott, the historic Inn has been transformed back into a fully functioning hotel.

Keilhauer, renowned for its commitment to supporting local communities and small businesses, enthusiastically partnered with owner Greg Knight to revitalize the Inn.

Before the Inn’s reopening in June 2024, Keilhauser President Meghan Sherwin approached Knight with an offer of support. Sherwin emphasized the importance Keilhauer places on supporting heritage buildings and local communities by donating to small businesses. Sherwin remarked, “We were excited to support this project which played at the intersection of modern design and heritage.” Thrilled by the offer, Knight accepted, thus beginning a beautiful new partnership.

Keilhauer’s award-winning hospitality furniture, curated by SDI Design’s Mardi Najafi, now enhances the Inn’s historic appeal with contemporary comfort. The donation also included a Green Room for touring entertainers, resulting in beautifully designed spaces that provide both relaxation and comfort.

“Historic places give shape to our communities and it’s important to renew and support the main streets of our towns and cities,” said Sherwin. “We’re excited to see our donated furniture that was not being used put to good use by impactful businesses in the community.” Keilhauer remains a strong believer that good design in shared spaces can create a positive impact on communities.
